My First Steps in Spanish is an early language program designed to offer Spanish for young children. All classes are filled with fun and well thought out activities where children learn by being immersed in the language “here and now”. We have planned thematic units as a way to present Spanish that becomes meaningful and easy to retrieve. During class we use games, music and movement, storytelling, and Arts & Crafts because we believe that children learn while engaged in fun educational activities.
Our classes are conducted in small groups with a maximum of 10 students per class.

Our curriculum has been inspired on the research done by Helena Curtain in her book, “Language & Children Making the Match”, and the findings by Stephen Krashen, Piaget, Vygosky and Egan. We have been able to apply these findings into a curriculum that exposes children to meaningful social activities.
We have created a breakdown of classes by different ages as a way to divide our children in levels of development. Our program is unique because we have been able to translate theory into practice. Second language acquisition mimics the same process as first language; therefore, children need exposure and social situations in order to build their own communication skills.

My formal education took place in Venezuela at the Colegio Universitario de Psicopedagogia, where I graduated with a bachelor Degree in Special Education. Once I completed my training and obtained my degree, I stared teaching at IDEA, a pre-k and Kindergarten school in Venezuela, where I worked for about four years. In 2001 I made a very difficult decision and decided to leave my family and friends behind and move to New York, to continue to further my education. I continued to follow my passion for kids. In 2001, I decided that teaching Spanish in the U.S. would give young kids the opportunity to learn a new language, provide them a tool for opportunities in the future while at the same time learning about different cultures.
In my move to the United States I had to struggle and learned to appreciate the importance and the complexity of learning a second language. So, I stared working as a Pre-K and Kindergarten Spanish teacher at several schools in long island, New York. Spanish All Year Center, Loving & Learning Educational Child care, FirstClass School, Spanish Immersion Workshop and Westbury Friends School to name a few. Over the past eleven years, I have developed a successful Spanish program that keeps kids motivated. A program in which they are immersed from the first day of class as if they were in a Spanish speaking country. Being a teacher to kids of different cultural backgrounds at different schools has been an enriching and gratifying experience. I feel very proud of my Latin roots and I am happy to be able to help children develop their Spanish speaking skills and gain an understanding of the Latin American culture.
