My First Steps in Spanish is an early language program designed to offer Spanish for young children. All classes are filled with fun and well thought out activities where children learn by being immersed in the language “here and now”. We have planned thematic units as a way to present Spanish that becomes meaningful and easy to retrieve. During class we use games, music and movement, storytelling, and Arts & Crafts because we believe that children learn while engaged in fun educational activities.
Our classes are conducted in small groups with a maximum of 10 students per class.

My name is Rebeca Lugo-Uzcategui and I was born in Valencia, Venezuela. My formal education took place in Venezuela at the Colegio Universitario de Psicopedagogia, where I graduated with a bachelor Degree in Special Education. A year before graduating I had the opportunity to complete a one year internship working with severely handicapped kids which turned out to be an outstanding experience that enhanced my professional career immensely. My name is Marianella Monsalve and I was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. I’m a publicist and worked at “EL IMPULSO” Newspaper for 3 years where I became the Manager creating and promoting ideas. When I moved to New York I had the opportunity to work as a teacher at an after-school Spanish program and also became a Girl Scout Leader and my creativity skills came into full action. Arts and Crafts it’s my specialty and working with children is now my passion.
Spanish ProgramsMommy and Me Class.
This class is for children between 5 month and 3 years of age and their parents. This class meets for 45 minutes and the children learn through organized play. Children and parents interact in Spanish while the sing, dance, create art, play games, and practice vocabulary. I provide musical CD, and vocabulary workbooks, to enable parents to continue with lessons at home. Programs OverviewSPANISH INFANT SENSORY CLASS (5-12 MONTH).
Spanish Infant Sensory Class is a 45 minute full immersion class, where we provide activities to develop the sensory processing system. When challenging the sensory system with new experiences, it enables the brain to integrate sensations as it relates to the external environment.
We will work on all five developmental domains: Gross and fine motor skills, communication, social and emotional cognitive abilities. We use repetitive verbal language, games, music, puppets and much more. These sensory stimulating activities, presented in Spanish, will help create the foundation of learning a new language.
SPANISH TODDLER CLASS (1-2 YEARS).
This class is a 45 minutes full immersion program. The parents engage and help the child with teacher directed activities. Your child will learn the colors, numbers, animals, shapes, and various songs in Spanish. We dance and play with instruments and toys while learning a new language.
SPANISH FOR YOUNG CHILDREN CLASS (2-3 YEARS).
Spanish Children Class is one hour class where Children and parents interact in Spanish while they sing, dance, create art, play games and practice Spanish vocabulary. We will use various thematic units to guide the content of all our activities. We will discuss subjects such as the seasons, weather and emotions and reinforce our knowledge of colors, numbers, body parts, shapes and animals.
SPANISH FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN (3-4 YEARS).
Spanish for Preschool Children Is a program designed for preschoolers.
This is an independent class where children come without parent interaction. This is the perfect opportunity to enhance your child’s Preschool experience. In our full immersion Preschool Class we teach the language through active learning, individualized attention, cultural themes and interdisciplinary units. We use story time, art, music, dance and variety of exciting activities so children are engaged in meaningful situations. Additionally, your child will receive a Binder with all the vocabulary from each session, a CD and a book of songs to sing along at home
All about me (5-6 Years) This is an independent class where children come prepare to listen-speak – read and write with all the activities we have prepare for you. In our class children have the opportunity to listen to stories and have fun following directions, singing and completing activities all in Spanish. We read stories that remind us of ourselves, we learn to read and write in Spanish to communicate and to expand the possibility of promotion a long life skills that will bring success in every child life.
MIS AMIGOS & YO (7-12 YEARS).
Mis Amigos & Yo is a 1-hour independent class where older children come to learn Spanish as they are immersed in Cultural Interdisciplinary Thematic Units. We believe that children benefit from learning about the Spanish Speaking World and become fascinated with the diversity of multicultural practices.
It is a cultural experience for children who won’t only learn Spanish, but would like to learn facts about Spanish speaking countries, their culture, people, food and music. They will travel through Spanish Speaking Countries and discover things like: the biggest river, the tallest mountain, special landmarks. They will also create representative crafts, singdescriptive songs, dance traditional dances and cooktraditional foods from these cultures.
PRIVATE TUTORING AVAILABLE FOR ALL AGES
We also provide private tutoring for those families who have a hectic schedule and find it hard to stick to our set classes. The teacher will come to your house and will provide the language experience your child needs according to the age and level of performance.read more
Our curriculum has been inspired on the research done by Helena Curtain in her book, “Language & Children Making the Match”, and the findings by Stephen Krashen, Piaget, Vygosky and Egan. We have been able to apply these findings into a curriculum that exposes children to meaningful social activities.
We have created a breakdown of classes by different ages as a way to divide our children in levels of development. Our program is unique because we have been able to translate theory into practice. Second language acquisition mimics the same process as first language; therefore, children need exposure and social situations in order to build their own communication skills.

A year before graduating I had the opportunity to complete a one year internship working with severely handicapped kids which turned out to be an outstanding experience that enhanced my professional career immensely. Once I completed my training and obtained my degree, I stared teaching at IDEA, a pre-k and Kindergarten school in Venezuela, where I worked for about four years. In 2001 I made a very difficult decision and decided to leave my family and friends behind and move to New York, to continue to further my education. I continued to follow my passion for kids. In 2001, I decided that teaching Spanish in the U.S. would give young kids the opportunity to learn a new language, provide them a tool for opportunities in the future while at the same time learning about different cultures.
In my move to the United States I had to struggle and learned to appreciate the importance and the complexity of learning a second language. So, I stared working as a Pre-K and Kindergarten Spanish teacher at several schools in long island, New York. Spanish All Year Center, Loving & Learning Educational Child care, FirstClass School, Spanish Immersion Workshop and Westbury Friends School to name a few. Over the past eleven years, I have developed a successful Spanish program that keeps kids motivated. A program in which they are immersed from the first day of class as if they were in a Spanish speaking country. Being a teacher to kids of different cultural backgrounds at different schools has been an enriching and gratifying experience. I feel very proud of my Latin roots and I am happy to be able to help children develop their Spanish speaking skills and gain an understanding of the Latin American culture.
